SRC - Short Range Certificate

VHF radio is a preferred means of alerting rescue centers

Nautical Safety

What is the Restricted Radio Telephone Operator’s Certificate used for?

The Restricted Radio Telephone Operator’s Certificate is mandatory to operate a radio. There are other mandatory or recommended licenses depending on recreational boating practice.

A VHF radio is required on board a pleasure craft if the vessel navigates outside French territorial waters, that is, beyond 12 nautical miles from the coast.

Commercial vessels and pleasure craft navigating more than six nautical miles from a safe haven must be equipped with a VHF radio (Very High Frequency). This device allows them to communicate with each other and to transmit, receive, and relay distress messages. A VHF radio is therefore part of the mandatory safety equipment on these vessels and can prove indispensable in certain conditions.

VHF radio is also a preferred means of alerting rescue centers, as well as all vessels in the area that are required to maintain a permanent watch on the emergency channel (channel 16). In addition, the transmission and reception range of a VHF radio is far greater than the coverage area of mobile phones, which cannot replace it under any circumstances.

At Infornav, as in other training centers, we teach you the essential concepts for proper VHF use and those required to pass your exam successfully.

You must therefore hold the CRR:

  • As soon as you wish to operate a fixed or handheld VHF radio outside French territorial waters
  • Within territorial waters (less than 12 nautical miles from the coast), the boat license is sufficient.

How does CRR training take place?

CRR training is divided into two parts:

  • The theoretical course in a training room
  • The theoretical exam during the week at the ANFR (National Frequency Agency) premises. It is a multiple-choice questionnaire (MCQ) of 20 questions divided into 3 chapters. To pass the exam, you must achieve the average in each chapter as well as overall.
