VHF on board a pleasure vessel if the boat is navigating outside French territorial waters, meaning more than 12 nautical miles from the coast.
Commercial vessels and pleasure boats sailing more than six miles from shelter, like commercial ships, must be equipped with a VHF radio (Very High Frequency). This device allows them to communicate with each other, but also to send, receive, and relay distress messages. A VHF radio is part of the safety equipment on these vessels and can be essential in certain conditions.
VHF radio is also a preferred means to alert rescue centers, as well as all vessels in the area, which are required to maintain a constant watch on the emergency channel (channel 16). Additionally, the range of a VHF radio in transmission/reception is much greater than that of mobile phones, which can never replace it.
