Sailing license

Understanding the regulatory reality and the value of proper training

The sailing license does not officially exist

Contrary to a widespread belief, there is no official sailing license in administrative terms in France.

A person may purchase a sailboat and navigate without holding any specific license, as long as the engine is not considered the main means of propulsion.

What the regulations actually say

Authorities distinguish between a motorboat and a sailboat based on the primary mode of propulsion. When the sail area is sufficient, the engine is considered auxiliary.

In this case, the coastal boating license is not required to sail. This applies to the vast majority of recreational sailboats.

No license does not mean no responsibility

The absence of a sailing license requirement does not mean that sailing can be improvised.

The skipper remains fully responsible: for crew safety, for decisions made, for compliance with navigation rules, and for managing degraded or critical situations.

Why proper sailing training remains essential

Sailing requires far more than the ability to steer or hoist sails. Anticipation, weather analysis, onboard organisation and decision-making are at the core of true autonomy.

Serious sailing training allows these skills to be acquired progressively, under supervision and in real sailing conditions.

Infornav sailing training: a responsible alternative

At Infornav, sailing training does not aim to replace a non-existent license, but to build coherent and lasting autonomy at sea.

The training includes:

This approach enables sailors to navigate with confidence, responsibility and clarity, whether they are beginners or already experienced.
