Sailing safety training – Fire & evacuation

Detect early, act fast, avoid escalation: the right reflexes to protect the crew and the boat.

A rare but critical risk

An onboard fire often develops very quickly: toxic smoke, loss of visibility, rapid spread in confined spaces. This is not “just another incident”: it is a situation that can make the boat uninhabitable within minutes.

The objective of this module within the nautical safety training is to provide a simple method: detect, contain, coordinate and decide, in order to act calmly and effectively.

Fire outbreak: the right reflexes

Identify and locate

Smell, smoke, abnormal heat, electrical trips, overheating equipment: learning to detect early warning signs allows intervention before escalation.

Contain before attacking

On a sailboat, a common mistake is opening a smoke-filled compartment too quickly: oxygen intake can worsen the situation. Training focuses on isolating the area, cutting power sources (electricity / gas / engine if relevant) and organising the crew.

Using equipment correctly

Fire extinguishers, fire blankets, buckets, pumps and communication tools: knowing what to use, where to aim and in which order, to remain effective without putting yourself at risk.

Evacuation: deciding without panic

Evacuation is a serious decision that must be prepared in advance. The training covers decision criteria (smoke, heat, loss of control, explosion risk, injuries), and how to prepare the crew (lifejackets, locating devices, VHF, first-aid kit, water, etc.).

Prepare and secure

A checklist-based approach is developed: who does what, priorities, communications, and how to limit organisational errors that can be extremely costly in real situations.

Communicate and alert

Early alerting (VHF/DSC if available), providing position and clear intentions, and maintaining structured communication are integral parts of safety reflexes.

Going further in safety training

The training also covers other critical situations, using the same approach: method, anticipation and decision-making at the right time.

Programmes and calendar

Training courses are offered in several formats (2, 3 or 5 days), depending on your experience and your sailing project.
